Starting tomorrow, Clayton County seniors, aged 55 and older, may have their taxes prepared for free at the Frank Bailey Senior Center in Riverdale.
The free tax service is provided in partnership with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), and will be offered through April 15, according to Angie Burda, kinship program coordinator for Clayton County Senior Services.
Membership at the senior center is not required to receive the free tax assistance, according to Burda.
"It's for all Clayton County residents [55 and older]," she said. "It does exclude county employees. We want to make sure it's available to the public. It's a much needed service for seniors, that they can go into a place that they're familiar with," she said. "And many are on a fixed income, and it can help save them a lot of money, based on their tax situation."
An appointment is required for the tax service, which will be offered Wednesdays and Fridays, from 9 a.m., until 4 p.m., at the center, which is located at 6213 Riverdale Road.
"It's best for folks to call early for appointments, because those appointments do fill up fast," said Burda.
Clayton County Senior Services has partnered with AARP to provide free tax preparation to seniors since 1987, she said.
Persons interested in having their taxes prepared may contact the Frank Bailey Senior Center, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m., until 5 p.m., to schedule an appointment.
In addition to the annual free tax preparation services, the senior center offers a variety of classes and other activities to center members.
"The senior center provides many quality, free programs, as well as reduced-fee programs," said Burda.
Free classes include beginning crochet, billiards, pinochle, line dancing and water walking. Classes that require a fee include tai chi, swimming, yoga, and sculpting.
Seniors aged 55 and older, and their spouses, may become members of the Frank Bailey Senior Center. According to Burda, the membership fee for Clayton County residents is $1 per year. The fee for seniors who do not live in Clayton County is $10 per year.
