Local church plans 'Souper' fund-raiser

A Henry County church is planning a fund-raiser this weekend, with a sports theme.

Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, located at 984 Panola Road in Ellenwood, will host its annual "Souper Bowl of Caring" on Sunday, from 12 to 1:30 p.m.

The event will support Joseph's Food Pantry, which is affiliated with First Presbyterian Church in Stockbridge, said Claire Yoder, pastor of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.

"We've been doing this for the past 12 years," Yoder said. "In the past 11 years, the church has raised $2,500."

The pastor said she hopes this year's fund-raiser will generate at least $500.

Last year's event raised $200, she added.

This year, volunteers from Mt. Zion United Methodist will cook and serve a chili, soup and cornbread lunch. The event is free, but donations for the food pantry will be accepted, Yoder said.

Monetary donations will help the pantry buy non-perishable food items.

"There are so many people in this community who are hungry," Yoder said. "We're a small congregation [but] we do our part."
