modations near Atlanta's airport now have an option not far from Hartsfield-Jackson's new Rental Car Center and the Georgia International Convention Center.
The recently opened SpringHill Suites Atlanta Airport Gateway, located at 2091 Convention Center Concourse in College Park, offers nearly 150 rooms within a few-minutes' train ride of the world's busiest airport.
According to Amanda Perlman, SpringHill Suites' general manager, travelers can get to the 81,313-square-foot hotel by hopping on the ATL SkyTrain from Hartsfield-Jackson, or the Rental Car Center, and getting off at the first stop.
Business "has consistently been increasing since the day we've opened," said Perlman.
SpringHill Suites has 147 rooms, which include king suites of approximately 350 square feet, and queen suites of approximately 392 square feet, Perlman said. The suite prices are in the range of $129 to $139 per night, she added.
"Our hotel rooms are 25 percent larger than most hotels," she said.
King suites provide guests with a king-sized bed, whereas queen suites are furnished with two queen-sized beds, she said. Each style of suite provides a variety of amenities, such as a mini refrigerator, microwave, iHome radio, 42-inch flat-screen TV and a sofa-bed.
SpringHill Suites also has a flight-schedule monitor located in the lobby lounge, she said.
Perlman said the six-story hotel offers free wired and wireless Internet service, a daily complimentary breakfast buffet, a 24-hour fitness room and an indoor pool.
The SpringHill Suites Atlanta Airport Gateway is also certified in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), Perlman said.
According to the U.S. Green Building Council, a LEED-certified building is designed and constructed to promote energy savings, water efficiency, carbon-dioxide emissions reduction, indoor environmental quality and the stewardship of resources.
SpringHill Suites has LEED features such as a drought-resistant landscape, and a white roof which reduces the absorption of heat.
"There is 30 percent water reduction, due to the use of low-flow shower heads and faucets," Perlman said.
In order to turn on the lights in a suite, a guest must place his or her hotel key card into a slot installed on the wall near the door, she added. Before leaving their suites, guests must remove their hotel key cards from the slot, turning off the lights within 45 seconds.
Perlman said the hotel was built with a minimum of 20 percent recycled material.
"LEED-certified buildings are designed to reduce waste in landfills, conserve energy and water, are healthier for associates and guests of the hotel, reduce harmful greenhouse-gas emissions and demonstrate the owner's commitment to the environment," said Perlman.
Perlman said a restaurant and bar called 2091, and a Starbucks coffee shop, are currently being constructed inside the hotel. They are anticipated to open this spring.
According to Barbra Coffee, director of economic development for the City of College Park, SpringHill Suites is part of the Gateway Center, which also includes a four-story office building known as Gateway Center One, and a Marriott hotel, which is scheduled to open in August.
"It [Gateway Center] is part of the vision of the city to maximize the developing potential of properties around the airport, and the opportunities that come with that," said Coffee.
Coffee said there is office space for lease at the 130,000-square-foot Gateway Center One, which is also LEED certified.
"I think it's just an incredible opportunity for College Park ... we are excited about the opportunity to add that kind of office environment," she said.
Jim Stormont, a partner with Grove Street Partners, LLC, which is developing the Gateway Center, said the Marriott will be 304,103 square feet, and have a 106,800-square-foot parking garage that can accommodate 340 vehicles.
"The idea of having hospitality near the airport, adjacent to the Gateway office building ... it is an incredible opportunity to be connected to the airport," said Coffee. "Clients can hop on the ATL SkyTrain and get to [the office] building and stay at a hotel."
Coffee said that the future phase of the Gateway Center's development plan includes the addition of sit-down restaurants, and two more office buildings.
"It is a $230 million project," Coffee said. "It's a huge investment to the city [College Park] to bring the kind of office environment we were looking for."
