Faye Kirk said she was "shocked" to be named by her fellow residents at the Benton House assisted-living facility in Stockbridge as their "Queen of Hearts."
"I was absolutely surprised," she said. "I had no idea."
Kirk, 90, received the honor Thursday, during the second annual Candlelight Dinner at Benton House. More than 100 people, including residents and seniors at the Benton Manor independent-living facility, came together with their loved ones to celebrate Valentine's Day.
According to Benton House Activities Director Jo Ann Cain, everyone in attendance was treated to prime rib, chicken cordon bleu, mashed potatoes and green beans -- and cheesecake for dessert. The evening, she said, also featured door prizes, and entertainment for those at the dinner.
"We had a harpist that came and played for the residents, and a guy that sang karaoke and acted like Frank Sinatra," said Cain. "We decorated with hearts everywhere, balloons and tinsel."
Another highlight of the night, she added, was when Kirk was named the Queen of Hearts.
"She's very friendly, and very outgoing," said Cain. "At Bingo, I call her my assistant, because if I'm late, she'll get everything set up, and she'll help any of the other residents that can't see the numbers."
According to the activities director, 20 women were contestants for the title of Queen of Hearts. The first runner-up in the contest, who received the Princess Prize, was Marjorie Peacock, 78, she added.
"I don't want to call it a beauty pageant, because they're all beautiful," said Cain.
Kirk has been a resident at Benton House for one year. When she won, she received flowers, a tiara, and a balloon with the words, "Queen of Hearts," on it.
Kirk is hopeful one of the reasons she was selected is because she strives to treat people the way she wants to be treated. "I'm good to everybody, and if they need help, I try to help them," she said.
