Last year, the Lovejoy wrestling team went to East Coweta for the Area 4-AAAAA dual championship meet and defeated the Indians.
With the circumstances reversed, East Coweta defeated Lovejoy, 39-33, in the finals of the Area 4-AAAAA dual championships at Lovejoy on Monday, preventing the Wildcats from repeating as area champions.
But Lovejoy still qualified for the state duals meet in Macon, which starts Friday at 8 a.m.
"I'm pleased that we made it," Lovejoy coach Kevin Jones said. "We gave it our best run, but in a dual meet format we didn't have what it takes to beat East Coweta out. I look forward to going down to state and representing Clayton County."
Locust Grove qualifies, Woodland falls just short
Locust Grove finished second in the Area 4-AAA dual championships Monday at Woodland, qualifying for the state dual meet in the program's first year of existence.
The Wolfpack finished third for the second straight year, falling to the Wildcats in the decisive matches.
"The guys are definitely a solid team," Woodland coach Fred Haney said. "We're just not a real powerful team and Locust Grove tended to have the powerful hitters."
Woodland hosts a quad meet Jan. 19 at 5 p.m.
