Crash snarls traffic on Tara Boulevard

A crash on Tara Boulevard Tuesday, involving a truck carrying oxygen tanks and an SUV, left one man injured and tied up traffic for three and a half hours, according to Clayton County Police.

The wreck happened around 4:55 p.m., on Tara Boulevard at Dixon Road in Jonesboro, according to Lt. Tina Daniel, a spokesperson for the police department.

The driver of the SUV was transported by helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Daniel said. The identity and condition of the man were not immediately available.

Daniel said minor injuries were reported by other people involved in the crash.

"There was a smell of alcohol from the SUV," Daniel said. "We do not know if anyone was drinking."

Daniel said the SUV turned in front of the truck, causing the truck to flip on its side.

She said some of the tanks the truck was carrying contained oxygen, while the contents of other tanks was unknown.

"Some of them were unmarked containers, so we're treating it as a hazmat [situation] ... waiting on a hazmat crew to do the cleanup," Daniel said.

Daniel said the driver of the SUV was expected to be cited for a stop sign violation.

"There could be additional charges, pending the outcome of the investigation," she said.
