Just when it looked like nobody was going to be able to cool off the Mt. Zion boys basketball team, Dutchtown rewrote the script with a 64-47 Region 4-AAAA victory Tuesday night in McDonough in the battle of Bulldogs.
Mt. Zion entered Tuesday night's contest riding a five-game winning streak, including an upset victory over Stockbridge on Saturday, but now the squad will have to start any winning streak all over again.
Dutchtown improved its record to .500 overall and in Region 4-AAAA action, improving to 8-8 and 5-5. Mt. Zion dropped to 11-8 overall and 6-5 in the region.
Alphonzo Reid led Dutchtown with 23 points. Derrick Brock added 15.
Mt. Zion was paced by DeMarcus Robinson with 12 points.
Dutchtown took control of the game early and led most of the way. Dutchtown head coach Bernard Farrell's club has won two games in a row and six of its last seven to put itself back in contention in the Region 4-AAAA race.
"In this league, it's going to be wide open," Farrell said. "You want to be one of the four teams standing at the end of the region tournament, and that's our goal."
Dutchtown jumped out to a 6-0 lead early and pushed it to 13-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Reid had the hot hand in the second period for Dutchtown. He answered a Mt. Zion basket with a 3-point shot to push the Dutchtown led out to 18-13 as part of his 11 point quarter.
Mt. Zion kept the game close in the second stanza with some long range shooting of its own. Robinson converted two 3-point shots in the quarter and Rodney Booker knocked down one as part of Mt. Zion's second quarter spurt.
Robinson's trey midway through the period cut the Dutchtown lead to 22-21.
Dutchtown regrouped and outscored Mt. Zion 6-1 the rest of the second quarter and led 28-23 at the break.
Mt. Zion clawed its way back in the third quarter and led briefly when Steve Wilson added back-to-back baskets to put his team up 38-35. It was Mt. Zion's biggest and only lead of the game.
"We didn't panic," Farrell said. "We just kept playing hard."
Dutchtown regained the lead for good when Avery Lynch sank a pair of free throws to put the home team in the lead 39-38.
Farrell's clubb extended its lead to 47-40 at the end of the third quarter.
Dutchtown outscored Mt. Zion 17-7 in the fourth quarter.
Dutchtown 62, Mt. Zion 26 girls: The Dutchtown Lady Bulldogs rolled off their third straight win Tuesday night with an easy Region 4-AAAA victory against Mt. Zion.
With the win, Dutchtown improved to 14-2 overall and 9-1in Region 4-AAAA play. Mt. Zion dropped its record to 2-17 and 1-10 in league action.
Dutchtown pulled out to a 17-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and extended it to a 30-15 lead at the break.
Dutchtown's Brittney Strickland spent most of the first half on the bench after scoring seven points early, but she came back in the second half with an offensive explosion, finishing with 19 points. Teammate Abria Trice finished with 17 points for Dutchtown
By the end of the third quarter, Dutchtown led 49-22.
Dominque Givance had seven points for Mt. Zion.
