A Tuesday night fire destroyed a 65,000-square-foot, empty warehouse that was under renovation at Fort Gillem, in Forest Park, according to a spokesman for the military base.
The blaze was reported around 10:35 p.m., by a patrol officer, according to Fort Gillem Media Relations Officer Peter Chadwick, in a written statement.
The warehouse was in the early stages of renovation, and was to be converted into office space, according to Chadwick.
"In addition, windy weather conditions caused the fire to spread to adjacent grassy and wooded areas; however, these secondary fires were quickly extinguished with little damage," Chadwick said in the statement.
He said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
"Acting under a mutual aid agreement, fire departments from Morrow, Forest Park and Clayton County joined the Fort Gillem Fire Department in containing and extinguishing the fire," he said.
He said it had not been determined whether the facility will be rebuilt.
