Voters across the state will head to the polls today to make their choices in the 2010 primary elections. In Clayton County, 58 precincts will be open from 7 a.m., to 7 p.m.
Today, on the ballot will be national and state candidates for such offices as: U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, Governor, Lt. Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, Agriculture Commissioner, Insurance Commissioner, State School Superintendent, Labor Commissioner, and Public Service Commissioner.
Locally, voters will cast ballots for state senators in districts 34 and 44. Also, state representatives will be selected in districts 60, 62, 74, 75, 76, 77, and 78. County commissioners will be chosen in districts 1 and 4; and County Board of Education members will be picked in districts 1, 4, 8, and 9.
With no challengers, incumbent District 60 State Rep. Gloria Tinubu, and District 62 State Rep. Joe Heckstall, along with incumbent District 8 Clayton County School Board Member Alieka Anderson, will assume their posts without contest. Tinubu, Heckstall, and Anderson are Democrats.
The race for state representative District 78 features incumbent State Rep. Glenn Baker (D-Jonesboro) against Jackie Anderson Woods, and the Clayton County Board of Education District 1race has incumbent Pamela G. Adamson against Richard F. Jones. With no Republican opposition, the winners will be decided at the primary.
During the 2006 mid-term election, only 17.34 percent of the county's 127,663 registered voters participated, according to Clayton County Board of Elections and Registration Director Annie Bright. However, she said this year's race may generate a higher turnout with the governor's race on the ballot.
"Voters tend to take more interest in presidential elections than any other," Bright said. "[However,] considering the fact that it is a gubernatorial and a local election, one would expect a higher voter turnout."
As of July 1, there were 147,075 registered voters in the county, according to Bright. All those who have yet to vote in either early or advance voting will have to do so at their specific precinct on Tuesday, she said.
This year's voting precincts are: East Clayton Elementary (EW1); Forest Park Middle School cafeteria (FP1); Huie Elementary School (FP2); Fountain Elementary School (FP3); G.P.
