Schools to host open houses for parents

Clayton County Public Schools officials have announced an open-house schedule for the county's 61 schools. It calls for holding the sessions at varying times, based on grade level.

The open houses will be conducted over two days, Thursday, Aug. 5, and Thursday, Aug. 12, according to School System Spokesman Charles White. The open houses for elementary schools, middle schools and ninth-graders will be held on Aug. 5, although not at the same time of day, the district's spokesman said.

Open houses for the tenth-grade, and up, will take place on Aug. 12, from 6 p.m., to 8 p.m.

The events, which will be held at each school, will take place as the school system is in the midst of starting a new school year. Classes for the 2010-2011 school year are scheduled to begin on Monday, Aug. 9.

"This is an excellent opportunity to visit the school's staff, [and] the students' teacher for the upcoming school year, in a relaxed setting," White said. "It's also a chance for children to get to know the layout and environment of the school they will be attending in the fall."

The school system will operate 35 elementary and primary schools, 14 middle schools, nine high schools, one kindergarten through eighth-grade academy, one sixth-grade through ninth-grade charter school, and one elementary school-level dual language charter school, during the upcoming year.

Among the changes for the 2010-2011 school year will be the opening of the Eddie J. White K-8 Academy, which will be located at 1108 Panhandle Road, in Hampton (near Lovejoy). Morrow Middle School has also moved into a new facility, which will be located at 5934 Trammel Road, in Morrow.

White said the school system is holding the elementary, middle and ninth-grade open houses at different times on Aug. 5, so parents who have children in multiple grade levels will not have to pick, and choose, which open house to attend.

"If a family has more than one child in the school system -- say they have one child in elementary school, and another entering high school -- this gives them the opportunity to attend both open houses," he said.

The open house schedule for Aug. 5 includes:

* Elementary school open houses, from 1 p.m., to 3 p.m.

* Middle school open houses, from 4 p.m., to 6 p.m.

* Ninth-grade open houses, from 6:30 p.m., to 8:30 p.m.

If a parent cannot make it to the open house, White said, "the schools will be inviting parents to come by, and be involved, throughout the school year, so it will not be a bad thing, if they cannot make it to the open house."
