Henry Chamber to hold $10,000 'reverse raffle'

Someone will win $10,000 in a "reverse raffle" drawing during the Henry County Chamber of Commerce's "Business After Hours" gathering.

The chamber is planning a "Great 10K Giveaway" fund-raiser for June 24. The event will be held at the Merle Manders Conference Center, 111 Davis Road, Stockbridge, according to Laura Luker, director of tourism and communications for the chamber.

"It's going to be a lot of fun," said Kay Pippin, Henry County Chamber of Commerce president. "It's a Business After Hours on steroids. We always have good Business After Hours [events], but this one's going to be even greater."

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and drawings for tickets begin at 6 p.m., Luker said. The holder of the winning ticket will get $10,000, she added. The money will either be cash, or on a gift card, said Pippin. Proceeds from the event will benefit the chamber, as well as promote its "Shop Local, Shop Henry" campaign, said Luker.

The event will be similar to a traditional raffle, but will, instead, be a "reverse raffle," said Charles Woodroof, former Henry County Chamber of Commerce chairman. "Instead of drawing a raffle ticket out of a hat, and you're a winner, we draw it out of a hat and you're not a winner," said Woodroof.

In a reverse raffle, the first ticket drawn is not the winner, but will be worth $500 to the ticketholder, said Luker. In similar, past raffles, the tickets are called by numbers with each calling session eliminating ticketholders. Those participating also can buy and sell tickets, so that in the end, the winner is the person who has the last ticket. In the raffle, the 100th, 200th, 300th and 400th tickets drawn will be automatically re-entered for a second chance to win, and the 500th ticket drawn will be the $10,000 winner, Luker said.

"Reverse raffles have been popular for many years, and we felt this was a terrific way to raise money for the chamber, especially with the opportunity to provide a great social setting," she added.

In a press release, the chamber's summer fund-raising committee chairman, Eddie Ausband, said the drawing is "a novel idea. Some lucky person wins $10,000, and, hopefully, spends a lot of that money supporting local businesses," Ausband said.

The winner, or a proxy-representative, must be present to show their winning ticket, said Luker. The winning ticketholder must present valid identification, and complete a W-9 form before getting the prize, she said. Everyone, regardless of chamber membership, Luker said, is invited to purchase a ticket and attend the event.

Some 500 tickets will be sold for $125 each, and each ticket will entitle the ticketholder, plus one guest, to admission, dinner for two, drinks and entertainment. Tickets have been on sale since May 24, and may be purchased at the Henry County Chamber of Commerce, 1709 Ga. Highway 20 West, McDonough, or from chamber board members.
