A 9-year-old male was in "serious" condition at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston Tuesday night, after he nearly drowned earlier in the day in the pool at the Virginia Burton Gray Recreation Center, in Riverdale, according to a Clayton County Police Department spokesman.
Just after 3:40 p.m., other young men in the pool were trying to pull the 9-year-old out of the water, while screaming, "He can't swim! He can't swim," said police spokesman, Officer Otis Willis, III.
A parent, who was at the pool with his 18-month-old child, was near the group, and helped pull the 9-year-old out of pool, the police spokesman said.
The man began performing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) on the youth until staff members came over and took over the CPR efforts, according to Officer Willis. He said police and paramedics were on the scene at 3:44 p.m., and they, then, took over the CPR efforts.
Willis said the youth was initially taken to Southern Regional Medical Center, before being air-lifted to Egleston. He said police were not releasing the youth's name, as of Tuesday evening.
