The Henry County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) hopes to protect the county's older residents from the adverse effects of excessive heat, according to a county official.
Don Ash, Henry County EMA director, said his department is asking for donations of new box fans, or cash contributions.
The money collected will be used to buy the fans for senior citizens, he said.
"A lot of seniors may not have functioning air conditioners," said Ash. "We're trying to present a level of comfort in their homes."
Taking into account the heat, the donations of the fans is expected to be an important precaution against heat exhaustion and heat stroke, added Ash.
"I think it can save a lot of lives," he said. "Being that it's the beginning of the summer, we can expect the conditions we're in to continue through the summer."
Fans may be dropped off at any Henry County fire station, continued Ash. Individuals interested in making a financial donation to help with the effort, are asked to call (770) 288-7865, he said.
