Local students graduate from institutions of higher learning

Cassandra Rochelle Doss, of McDonough, and Nichelle Nevette Nance, of Hampton, graduated this spring from Atlanta Christian College in Atlanta.

Henry County residents , Amy Breedlove, Joshua Skelton, Alton Dunlap, and Emily Fondren, graduated this spring from Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, Ga. Fondren, along with locals, Chelsea Knowlton and Jasmine Watkins, was named to GSW's Spring 2010 Semester Academic Achievement List, by previously earning at least 15 hours of credit, being enrolled 3-to-14 hours, and earning a 3.5 or higher grade point average. Forrest Price, of Henry County, also was named to GSW'S Spring 2010 Semester Dean's List, by taking 15 hours of courses and earning a 3.5 GPA.

Several other local students were named to the Winter 2010 Quarter President's Honor Roll at The Art Institute of Atlanta. They include Locust Grove resident, Jeffrey Smith, Stockbridge resident, Chantelle Zenon, and McDonough residents, Lisa English, Chad Marvin, and Dorothy Thompson. Students making the honor roll must be full-time and earn a 4.0 GPA for the quarter.

Chick-fil-A announces four local scholarship winners

Chick-fil-A team members, Billy Thompson, Jr., and Brighton Camacho,,from McDonough; Joshua Anderson, from Morrow, and Angela Scott, from Locust Grove, are the newest recipients of the chain's 37-year-old national leadership scholarships worth $1,000 each. Thompson is studying the Bible through Maranatha Baptist Bible College in Watertown, Wis. Camacho is studying business administration at Gordon College in Barnesville, Ga. Anderson is studying information technology at Clayton State University in Morrow, and Scott is studying nursing at Gordon.

Military notes

Air Force Airman David Bucovaz recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Bucovaz, the son of Joseph Bucovaz, of McDonough, is a 2008 graduate of Ola High School.

Army Pvt. Michael Allen has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Leonard Wood in Waynesville, Mo. Allen, the son of Michael Allen, of Hampton, is a 2009 graduate of Lovejoy High School.

Army Pvt. Ryan King graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga. King is the son of Ginger King, of Tampa, Fla., and Brett King, of Stockbridge.

Army Reserve Spec. Cherrona Williams completed Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla. Williams is the daughter of Sharon Williams ,of Alpharetta, Ga., and stepdaughter of Calvin Wright, of Stockbridge. Williams earned a master's degree in 2009 from St. Leo University, in Florida.

Army National Guard Pvt. Taylor Wright recently graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. Wright is the son of Kimberly Speight and nephew of Yvette Tatem, both of Hampton, Ga. The private is a 2009 graduate of the Georgia Youth Challenge Academy at Fort Stewart.

Army Pfc. Bryan Huggins completed basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. Huggins, the son of Tami Mann, of McDonough, graduated in 2002 from Eagles Landing High School, and received an associate degree in 2005 from Griffin Technical College in Griffin.

Montaveous Thomas has been promoted to the rank of staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve. Thomas, a commander's aide with nine years of military service, is regularly assigned to the 561st Regional Support Group in Omaha, Neb. He is the son of Glenda Poole, of McDonough, and Willie Thomas, of Leary, Ga. The sergeant's grandmother is Rebecca Humphries, of Dawson, Ga., and his stepfather, Charlie Poole, resides in Albany, Ga.
