North Clayton defeats Glynn at the buzzer

Special to the Daily

North Clayton sophomore Marcus Hunt made a put-back layup at the buzzer as the sixth-ranked Eagles won 61-59 over fourth-ranked Glynn Academy in Tuesday's second round Class AAAA playoff game.

The win sends North Clayton (26-3, Region 4-AAAA No. 3 seed) to the quarterfinal round of the state playoffs where they'll face third-ranked Richmond Academy on Saturday at Ft. Valley State. Richmond defeated Dutchtown 61-47 at home on Tuesday.

On the flip side, the loss snapped an 18-game winning streak for The Red Terrors (23-4, Region 2-AAAA No. 1 seed), who won the regular season championship and their region tournament.

"Unfortunately, that's two years in a row where we've lost at the buzzer like that," said Glynn coach Dan Moore, whose team fell 43-40 to Richmond Academy in 2009 in the Elite Eight on a three-pointer that fell through as time expired. "Last year, it was in the 'eights' and this year in was in the 'sixteens.'"

The disparity from the free throw line was an underlying them in the game. Glynn was 12-for-23 at the charity stripe (52 percent), while North Clayton was 15-for-19 (79 percent).

"Our free throw shooting wasn't (good), but theirs was," Moore said. "Theirs was terrific. They won the game at the line."

The game was a tale of two halves as North Clayton pulled out to a 34-26 lead by the intermission, then saw Glynn roll up 23 third-quarter points that closed the gap to 51-49 after three, setting up a marvelous final frame.

A three-pointer by Glynn guard Dominique Holton with 1:21 seconds to play drew Glynn to within a point at 59-58 after the Patriots had inched ahead by four points twice in the fourth. Marquise Cuyler sank a free throw to bring the Red Terrors even 29 seconds later but that would be all the scoring for Glynn.

Hunt finished with 18 points -- none bigger than his last two -- to lead North Clayton. Cuyler led all scorers with 19 points to go along with nine rebounds and five blocked shots. Holton finished with 14 for Glynn.
