Eternal life is the gift of God! - James Bell

In my years of experience in witnessing for the Lord Jesus, I have heard many statements of how people feel they are going to Heaven when they die.

There are several questions we have used over the years to determine where people are spiritually, where they feel they are going when they die.

An example is: We know this will not happen to you now, but just suppose you were to die tonight, do you think you would go to Heaven? Why do you feel this way? (Please ask yourself this same question.)

Some people would say, "I don't know. How can a person know for sure if they will go to Heaven? Is this possible? (We would assure them that they can know for certain, because the Bible tells us it is a fact.)

Others would say, "Oh, yes, I know I will because I belong to [a certain] church," or, "I believe I will because my mother used to pray for me every day!"

Others may say they believe they will because they are basically a good person and don't think God would let a good person go to hell.

I have heard all these answers and many more, and none of them is correct, according to God's Holy Word, the Bible.

There are many scriptures in the Bible that tell us plainly what one must do to go to Heaven. John 3:16 is probably the best known of these, because of its frequent use. Almost everyone to whom I witnessed, can quote this verse from memory: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believed in Him would not perish but would have eternal life."

This verse is well known for a number of reasons, one of which is that it is used in almost every gospel presentation, and most sermons. Some faithful Christians see that it is included on the screen of most widely televised sports programs.

How many times have you seen a fan hold up a sign that simply says, "John 3:16," at a sporting event? I think God has blessed this verse above most others, because it tells the Gospel story in one verse.

Romans 3:23 tells us we have sin in our life. It says flatly and unconditionally, "All have sinned and come short of the Glory of God." Likewise, Romans 6:23 tells us, "The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life." First John 1:8 says, "If you say you have no sin, you are a liar and the truth is not in you!"

These verses should certainly be enough to convince a person of having sin in their life, if there is any doubt, for most of us know we have sinned.

Being assured of going to heaven is as simple as A.B.C:

*Admit your sin. (I was witnessing one night to a 7-8-year-old girl, and asked her if she knew she had sin in her life. She said, "Yes I do." Then her Grandmother said, "No! This sweet little girl does not have sin in her life!" But the girl said, "Oh yes I do, and I want to be forgiven now!)

* B. Believe that Jesus Christ died and rose again to pay for your sins.

* C. Confess your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior, repenting (turning away from sin). Please read Romans 5:8 and 10:9.

The free gift of eternal life (heaven) is yours only through faith in Jesus Christ. Please read Ephesians 2:8, 9. Put your faith in Him by praying this prayer, right now, as you read this article:

"Dear God, I know I am a sinner, I have sinned against you and I am sorry. I humbly ask for your forgiveness. I do believe in Jesus Christ, His life and death on the cross and His resurrection. Please teach me how to live a life that honors you, and increase my faith each day. I ask this prayer in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen."
