Henry County offering teen driving course

By Jason A. Smith

Henry County's Life Management Solutions Department will be offering a summer driver-education course for teenagers, with assistance from the Henry County Sheriff's Office.

The first 2010 sessions of the Youth Educational Driver's Program will be held June 8 through June 11, from 8 a.m., to 4 p.m., at 40 Atlanta Street in McDonough. The cost to register for the course is $200 for Henry residents, and $225 for non-residents. The course, according to Sandra Reagan, director of Life Management Solutions, provides an economical option for parents of teens on the verge of getting their licenses.

"It's quite a savings, because you get a $150 tax deduction at the end of the year," she said. "With a Life Management Solutions driving certificate, most insurance companies will give a 10-percent discount."

Reagan said the driving class has been a success since its 2007 inception.

"According to the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, our classes were the only classes in [the] state of Georgia taught by certified members of law enforcement," Reagan said. "We have a 100-percent success rate. All the students who have taken the class have successfully completed the program."

Since the program began, 1,200 teenagers have participated, Reagan added.

Reagan said additional components have been added to the course this year, regarding laws related to DUI, drugs and sending text messages while driving.

"We show -- with the parents' consent -- a lot of live footage of wreckage, accidents and what can happen," she said. "We have a lot of teen drivers who don't realize the dangers that they can get into, not only accidentally but legally."

Additional sessions of the program are scheduled to be held June 22 through June 25, July 13 through July 16 and July 27 through July 30, all from 8 a.m., to 4 p.m. The last class of each session will end at 2 p.m., according to Henry County Communications Director Julie Hoover-Ernst.

"The final session is in August and will be held three nights per week, beginning Aug. 10 and continuing over a three-week period from 5:30 p.m., to 8:45 p.m.," Hoover-Ernst added.
