C.H. "Red" Shumate, 87, of McDonough, died Friday, Nov. 5, 2010. He was born in Conyers, to the late Jessie Dewitt Shumate and Mary Frances Bradford Shumate. He was also preceded in death by two sons, James Teddy Shumate and William Clayton Shumate. Mr. Shumate was the owner and operator of Shumate Construction Co., for 40 years. He was an Army Veteran of WW II, serving his country from 1944 to 1946. During his service, he received the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, the Victory Ribbon, two Overseas Service Bars, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon with one Bronze Star, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was very proud of his service to his country. Mr. Shumate was a member of Union Grove Baptist Church. He loved his God and church family. "Red" was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Mr. Shumate is survived by his wife of 66 years, Drewwillie Shumate; sons, Glenn and Nancy Shumate, of McDonough, and Patrick Lee Shumate, of Millidgeville; daughters, Peggy and Jimmy Fillingim, Mauk, Ga., and Kathy Blankenship, Loganville, Ga.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held TODAY (Tuesday, Nov. 9), at 11a.m., at the Union Grove Baptist Church. The Rev. Ralph Easterwood and the Rev. Frank Nuckolls are officiating. Interment will follow at Dawn Memorial Park. The family received friends Monday from 2p.m., to 4 p.m., and 6 p.m., to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
