Garland Smith Hobbs Garland Smith Hobbs, 92, of Mableton, died Nov. 9, 2010. Garland was born on May 20, 1918, in Haralson County, to John and Minerva Hobbs. The seventh of eight children (six boys and two girls), he married the former Connie Boggs, in April 1940, and they moved to Atlanta, where he worked for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company as retread plant manager, and later as a salesman, where he spent most of his career. He achieved recognition as top salesman in the Southeast for two years, and in the United States for one year. Garland served as an officer in the Woodlawn Presbyterian Church, in the Grove Park community of Atlanta. The couple raised three children before moving to Cobb county in 1962. A member of First Baptist Church in Mableton, Garland was an avid fisherman, golfer, and gardener. He and Connie traveled extensively throughout the United States, with friends, via motor home. He lost his wife to cancer in 1990, and later married the former Marie Cole, of Mableton. Garland is survived by his wife, Marie Garner Cole Hobbs; children, Jerry and Gayle Hobbs, Judy and Bill Osborne, and Carol and Danny Hope; three grandchildren, Todd and Jana Hobbs, Holli Hobbs, Carrie and Adam Stead; great-grandchildren, Carter Hobbs, Parker Hobbs Hayden Brackett, and Cohen Stead. His grandson, Timothy Brackett preceded him in death. Funeral Services will be Thursday, at 3 p.m., in Gene Davis-White Columns Chapel in Mableton, with the Rev. Joe Brice officiating. A private burial will follow at Mozley Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m., to 3 p.m. prior to the service. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
