First-round playoff games ready to kickoff

The playoff brackets have been set. Six teams from the Southern Crescent will be apart of the postseason. Here is a look at the opponents of the area teams:

Glynn Academy vs.


When, where: Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Twelve Oaks Stadium, Hampton

Records, rankings: Glynn is 7-3 and the No. 4 seed from Region 2-AAAA; they are unranked. Lovejoy is 10-0 and the top seed from Region 4-AAAA, and ranked No. 7 in the state by the Associated Press.

About Glynn Academy: The school is located in Brunswick, which is 290 miles South of Hampton on the coast. School mascot is the Red Terrors.

Need to know: Current Charlotte Bobcats center Kwame Brown is a 2001 graduate of the school. He was the first No. 1 draft pick to be selected straight out of high school in NBA history.

Playoff history: Glynn won the 1964 Class AAA championship. The Red Terrors have a 2-12 playoff record, and haven't won in the postseason in their last seven trips.

2010 best win: A 17-10 victory over Effingham County to clinch playoff spot.

2010 worst loss: A 21-7 defeated to Ware County in the sixth week of the season.

Ware County vs. North Clayton

When, where: Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Southern Crescent Stadium, Riverdale

Records, rankings: Ware County is 8-2, and the No. 3 seed from Region 3-AAAA. North Clayton is 9-1 and the No. 2 seed from Region 4-AAAA. Both teams are unranked.

About Ware County: The school is located in Waycross, which is the closest city to the Okefenokee Swamp. Waycross is 235 miles South of Clayton County. Team mascot is the Gators.

Need to know: Current Buffalo Bills cornerback Leodis McKelvin is a former all-state player for the Gators. Former Walton coach Ed Dudley is in his second season at the school.

Playoff history: Ware County lost to Northside-Warner Robins in the 2007 Class AAAA title game.

2010 best win: Defeated Class AAAAA playoff team Coffee 31-14 in season opener.

2010 worst loss: Was to Brunswick 22-14, which probably cost them the No. 2 seed from the region.

Washington-Wilkes vs. Eagle's Landing Christian

When, where: Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Commitment Field, McDonough

Records, rankings: Washington-Wilkes is 4-6 and the No. 4 seed from Region 7-A, they are unranked. ELCA is 10-0 and the No. 1 seed from Region 5-A, ranked No. 2 in Class A.

About Washington-Wilkes: Located in the city of Washington, which is an hour and 50 minutes East of McDonough. In 1780, it became the first city in the nation to be established in the name of President George Washington.

Need to know: Washington-Wilkes has a 50-29 all-time record in the playoffs.

Playoff history: The Tigers won four state titles in the 1960s in the state's smallest classification.

2010 best win: Was 17-14 in overtime against Aquinas, the only team Washington-Wilkes defeated with a winning record.

2010 worst loss: Was 35-0 to Thomson in the first game of the season.

Dutchtown vs. Thomas County Central

When, where: Friday, 8 p.m. at the Jackets' Nest

Records, rankings: Thomas County Central is 8-2 and the No. 2 seed from Region 1-AAAA, and ranked No. 10 in the state. Dutchtown is 9-1 and the No. 3 seed from Region 3-AAAA.

About Thomas County Central: Located in the Thomasville, which is known as the City of Roses. The school has produced 109 all-state and two NFL players.

Need to know: Former Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward played at the school before a standout career at Florida State. Current defensive end Ray Drew is a minister and a highly recruited prospect.

Playoff history: Once a powerhouse team, the Yellow Jackets won five Class AAA titles in a six-year span in the 1990s. They have the second most playoff wins in Class AAAA.

2010 best win: Was 35-29 in overtime against Colquitt County at home.

2010 worst loss: Was 34-14 against top-ranked Northside-Warner Robins on the road.

Henry County vs. Baldwin

When, where: Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Braves Stadium, Milledgeville

Records, rankings: Baldwin is 9-1 and the No. 2 seed from Region 2-AAA, and ranked No. 6. Henry County is 6-4 and the No. 3 seed from Region 4-AAA, and unranked.

About Baldwin: Located in Milledgeville, which is an hour and 20 minutes from McDonough. The Baldwin mascot is the Braves.

Need to know: This is Dexter Copeland's first season at Baldwin since moving over from nearby Twiggs County.

Playoff history: Baldwin is 16-14 overall in the postseason with its best finish in reaching the Class AAAA semifinals in 2005.

2010 best win: Was 35-0 over playoff contender Westside-Macon in the third week of the season.

2010 worst loss: Was 35-15 last week to Peach County in a game that decided the region championship.

Stockbridge vs. Peach County

When, where: Friday, 8 p.m. at Anderson Stadium, Fort Valley

Records, rankings: Peach County is 10-0 and the No. 1 seed from Region 2-AAAA, and ranked No. 1. Stockbridge is 6-4 and the No. 4 seed from Region 4-AAAA, and unranked.

About Peach County: Located in Fort Valley, which is an hour and 30 minutes from Stockbridge. It is the corporate headquarters of the Blue Bird Corporation, the manufacturer of school buses.

Need to know: Peach County count eight former or current NFL players among its alumni.

Playoff history: The school has won three state championships. Peach has won three state titles in the past five seasons.

2010 best win: Was 35-15 over Baldwin for the region championship last week.

2010 worst win: The Trojans did not lose a game during the regular season.
