DAHLONEGA, Ga. – November 19, 2010 – Hitting the road for the first time this season, the Clayton State Laker women's basketball turned it up a notch on Friday with an impressive 106-46 rout over Lynn at the Chick-Fil-A North Georgia Tip-Off Classic.
The victory improves No. 21 Clayton State to 3-0 overall, and it's the fourth 100-point game in Laker women's basketball history. The 60-point difference was also the second-highest margin of victory for Clayton State in program history. Lynn falls to 1-2 overall.
The Lakers were hitting on all cylinders offensively, shooting 53 percent from the field for the game, including 64 percent in the second half. Clayton State also shot 42 percent from 3-point range and forced 40 Lynn turnovers with 27 steals in its vaunted pressure defense.
After Lynn took an early 4-2 lead, Clayton State responded with a 17-0 run in which the Lakers forced six Lady Knight turnovers in the process. Junior guard Tanisha Woodard scored nine points, including a 3-point basket, during the rally. A lay-up Drameka Griggs gave Clayton State a 19-4 lead with 14:37 remaining.
Lynn was able to cut the lead to 15 points, 24-9 on a free throw Marquis Lee at the 12:17 mark, but Clayton State out-scored the Lady Knights 36-12 for the duration of the first half.
Three times, the Lakers increased the lead to 39 points. Two free throws Timethia Bennett gave Clayton State a commanding 60-21 lead at halftime.
The closest Lynn could cut the Clayton State lead in the second half was 39 points. But the Lakers responded with a 13-0 run and never looked back. A lay-up Renee Jackson with 13:11 remaining gave the Lakers a 79-27 cushion.
Clayton State's largest lead of the game was a whopping 66 points, 106-40 on a driving lay-up Latonda Bruce at the 3:03 mark.
Woodard paced a balanced Clayton State offensive attack with 22 points on 10-for-14 shooting from the field. Bruce scored 16 points off the bench, followed Jackson with 13 points and Brittany Hall scored 11 points. The Laker bench contributed 57 points, and Clayton State out-rebounded Lynn 42-32.
Chelsea Patterson scored 18 points for Lynn, while Amanda Schultz scored 10 points.
Clayton State plays Chowan at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the Chick-Fil-A North Georgia Tip-Off Classic.
