ELCA mission team to host 5K fund-raiser

A team of students, and staff members, at Eagle's Landing Christian Academy in McDonough, are raising money for a mission trip to help construct an orphanage in Martha Brae, Jamaica.

"This is actually our fifth year in a row to go to Martha Brae," said Kevin Hornsby, the missions coordinator, campus pastor, and senior Bible teacher at ELCA.

"The students will be putting a roof on an existing block building," Hornsby said. "They will be visiting children at the orphanage as well."

ELCA's Jamaica Mission Team will host a One-Mile Fun Run and 5K Race on Saturday, Dec. 11. Hornsby said the event -- to be held at Nash Farm Battlefield Park, 4361 Jonesboro Road in Hampton -- begins at 8:30 a.m., with the Fun Run, and at 9 a.m., with the 5K Race.

Hornsby noted that the race is being called the 4Twenty4, named after biblical text in Joshua 4:24 -- "So that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty, that you may fear the Lord your God forever."

Members of the mission team hope to raise enough to support some of the 23 people who will attend the mission trip, Feb. 21-26, at a cost of $1,200 per student, he added.

"Hopefully, we'll be able to raise quite a bit," he said. "If we raise more than it would take to get the kids out there, we'd use the money to purchase construction materials."

Morgan Allman, a team member and high school senior at ELCA, has participated in two previous mission trips to Jamaica.

"I didn't realize how poverty-stricken it is," said Allman. "They're in so much need out there. It really touched my heart, and made me want to reach out in any way possible."

Hornsby said there are three different sponsorship categories for the race. Gold sponsorships are donations of $500 or more, while silver and bronze sponsorships are $250 or more, and $100 or more, respectively.

Race participants can register online at www.active.com. Pre-registration is $20, and race-day registration is $25. Registration will be open through Dec. 9. For more information, contact race organizers, at (770) 298-3163, or at (404) 326-3110.
