School Notebook: Riverdale library to host 'Fire Safety' session

Thursday

The Riverdale Branch of the Clayton County Library System will hold a "Fire Safety Story Time," on Thursday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m., to 11 a.m. The library branch is at 420 Valley Hill Road, in Riverdale. Call (770) 472-8100.

West Clayton Elementary School will hold its first Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meeting of the school year on Thursday, Oct. 7, beginning at 6:30 p.m., at the school, which is located at 5580 Riverdale Road, in College Park. The meeting agenda is expected to include adoption of the group's budget, selection of committees, and presentations from the school's business partners. Light refreshments are expected to be served. The Lovejoy Branch of the Clayton County Library System will hold "The Art of Storytelling," a special class on Saturday, Oct. 9, from 10 a.m., to noon, at the library, which is located at 1721 McDonough Road, in Hampton. The Lovejoy Branch of the Clayton County Library System will hold "Mobile Arts & Crafts, with Arlene Bellemy," on Saturday, Oct. 9, from 2 p.m., to 3:30 p.m., at the library, at 1721 McDonough Road, in Hampton. Arlene Bellamy, of Arts Clayton, will read stories to attending children, and then make arts and crafts, for special occasions and holidays. The session is for children, ages 4, and up. Monday- Tuesday

The Morrow branch of the Clayton County Library System will hold a "Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month" event for children, on Monday, Oct. 11, from 6:30 p.m., to 7:30 p.m., at the library, at 6225 Maddox Road, in Morrow. Clayton County Public Schools will be closed on Monday, Oct. 11, and Tuesday, Oct. 12, in observance of the district's annual Fall Break.

The headquarters branch of the Clayton County Library System will hold "Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with ‘Lingual Kids,'" for area children, on Tuesday, Oct. 12, from 11 a.m., to 11:45 a.m., at the branch, which is located at 865 Battle Creek Road, in Jonesboro. The headquarters branch of the Clayton County Library System will hold "Blinks Breastfeeding at the Library," on Wednesday, Oct. 13, from 11 a.m., to 1 p.m., at 865 Battle Creek Road, in Jonesboro. Mothers in various stages of pregnancy, and breast-feeding, are invited to share their stories, in a session led by officials from the "Blinks" Breastfeeding League. The headquarters branch of the Clayton County Library System will hold a free "Women Empowerment Workshop," on Thursday, Oct. 14, from 7 p.m., to 8:45 p.m., at the branch, at 865 Battle Creek Road, in Jonesboro. Motivational speaker, Renita Gibbs, is scheduled to lead the workshop, which is expected to focus on beliefs and attitudes, for women, which lead to positive self-esteem, and professionalism. Oct. 30

Church Street Elementary School will hold a Community Festival on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 11 a.m., to 3 p.m., at the school, located at 7013 Church St., in Riverdale. The event is being held to celebrate the school making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for a 10th year. Call (770) 994-4000.

The Clayton County Public Library System offers many services to students, including tutoring programs for those who speak either English or Spanish, and online practice tests and electronic test-preparation books for the SAT, GED, ASVAB, and TOEFFL exams. The Everett Music School is offering a Music After School Program for local children, at the school's new location at the Emmanuel Baptist Church Campus, at 230 Ga. Hwy. 138, Bldg. B, in Riverdale. Through the program, youths receive homework assistance, Criterion-Reference Competency Test (CRCT) preparation, math and reading enrichment, and music lessons for piano, drums, singing and music theory.
