Eagle's Landing Country Club working on bringing LPGA back to Southern Crescent

From 1992-2006, the LPGA was a regular visitor to Eagle's Landing Country Club as some of the tour's top players competed in one of the sport's premier events.

Former standout Annika Sorenstam was the event's only two-time winner, capturing the championship in 2001 and 2005.

Hall of Fame golfer Nancy Lopez won the event in 1997 and served as tournament host during its latter years. It was the last of Lopez's 48 LPGA wins.

The two popular golfers were part of the history that helped turn the one-time LPGA event into one of the most popular stops on the women pro circuit.

In between their wins, Dottie Mochrie, won the first tournament in 1992 and Sung Ah Yim the last in 2006. Eleven other golfers collected the first-place check and trophy.

But sponsorship eventual became an issue as Chick-fil-A, which had served as the title sponsor from 1995-2005, dropped its affiliation with the tournament.

Orange juice company Florida's Natural was the tournament host in 2006, but the event went away the following year after efforts to land a regular sponsor failed.

Now, strides are being made to bring the tournament back to town, and it starts with a fund-raiser, "The GrassRoots Classic."

Metro South Golf Charities is involved in trying to bring the once popular four-round LPGA event back to Mc Donough.

Metro South Golf Charities has raised over $7.5 million for charities over the years and would continue to serve as a partnership with future LPGA events at Eagle's Landing Country Club.

The scramble-format team tournament is set for November 8 at Eagle's Landing Country.

Several levels of sponsorship are available and teams can register at WWW.MSGC.me.

"We would love to have something in place to bring an LPGA tournament back to Eagle's Landing 2012," said Jessica Mayo, who serves as the Grassroots Classic Tournament Director.

"One of the things we are trying to do is keep the interest up and get the the word out."

Some of the money raised bhy MSGC also goes to charities in the Southern Crescent area, according to Mayo.

Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed a press conference with LPGA golfer Rosie Jones.

Jones has just been named the captain of the 2011 Solheim Cup team.

Before the tournament starts, LPGA commissioner Michael Whan will deliver a keynote address.

The first groups are expected to tee off at 11:15 a.m. The event will conclude with a post-tournament concert.
