School Notebook: King Elementary hosting math night, fall festival

Thursday

Martin Luther King, Jr., Elementary School will host a Family Math Night, and Fall Festival, on Thursday, Oct. 28, from 5 p.m., to 8 p.m., at the school, which is located at 5745 West Lee's Mill Road, in College Park. Fountain Elementary School will host a Math Fun Night, on Thursday, Oct. 28, from 5 p.m., to 7 p.m., at the school, which is located at 5215 West St., in Forest Park. Call (404) 362-3875.

Morrow High School's Parent-Teacher Student Association (PTSA) will meet on Thursday, Oct. 28, beginning at 6:30 p.m., at the school, which is located at 2299 Old Rex Morrow Road, in Morrow. The issue of overcrowding is expected to be discussed.

Saturday

Jonesboro High School's Parent-Teacher Student Association will hold its "CardinalFest" fall festival, on Saturday, Oct. 30, beginning at 7:30 a.m., at the school, which is located at 7728 Mt. Zion Blvd., in Jonesboro. The event will include a 3K run, that starts at 7:30 a.m., a live auction at noon, a "Bark and Wag" show, business expo, carnival games, an all-day "Mega Yard Sale," and a softball tournament involving Riverdale police, and Clayton County police, sheriff's deputies, and firefighters. Mt. Zion Primary School will hold a Math and Science Festival, on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 8 a.m., to 1:30 p.m., at the school, which is located at 2920 Mt. Zion Road, in Jonesboro. Call (770) 472-2828.

Sequoyah Middle School will hold a Red Ribbon Week Parade, and WarriorFest, on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 8 a.m., until 6 p.m. The WarriorFest will be held at the school, which is located at 95 Valley Hill Road, in Riverdale. The parade will begin at 10 a.m., at nearby Riverdale Middle School, which is located at 400 Roberts Drive, in Riverdale, and end at Sequoyah Middle School. Call (770) 515-7524.

Church Street Elementary School will hold a Community Festival on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 11 a.m., to 3 p.m., at the school, located at 7013 Church St., in Riverdale. The event is being held to celebrate the school making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for a 10th year. Call (770) 994-4000.

The Forest Park Branch of the Clayton County Library System will hold auditions for its holiday program, on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 2 p.m., to 4 p.m. The cast will include six males, and three females, of all ages, and two boys, between the ages of 8 and 12, and two girls, between the ages of 8 and 10. A prepared monologue is optional. The holiday program, which will be performed on Dec. 11, will consist of three short plays. The branch is located at 696 Main St., in Forest Park. The Jonesboro Branch of the Clayton County Library System will hold a "Halloween Movie & Treats" event, on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 2:30 p.m., to 4 p.m. The movie is "The Haunted Mansion." Light refreshments will be served. Children who wear Halloween costumes can have their pictures taken, with parental consent. Children will also be able to come in all day, for Trick-or-Treating. The Clayton County Board of Education will hold its November business meeting on Monday, Nov. 1, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Clayton County Public Schools Central Administration Complex, at 1058 Fifth Ave., in Jonesboro.

Clayton County Public Schools recently announced that its Director of Transportation, John Lyles, has been elected to serve on the State Board of Directors for the Georgia Association of Pupil Transportation, as the Metropolitan Regional Education Support Agency representative for the 2010-2011 school year.

The Clayton County Board of Education is asking Clayton County residents to donate non-perishable food items between now and Nov. 15, to feed needy families of students in the county's school system. The food can be dropped off at the Clayton County Public Schools Central Administration Complex, which is located at 1058 Fifth Ave., in Jonesboro. For more information, call (770) 473-2966.

The Clayton County Public Library System offers many services to students, including tutoring programs for those who speak either English or Spanish, and online practice tests and electronic test-preparation books for the SAT, GED, ASVAB, and TOEFFL exams. The Everett Music School is offering a Music After School Program for local children, at the school's new location at the Emmanuel Baptist Church Campus, at 230 Ga. Hwy. 138, Bldg. B, in Riverdale. Through the program, youths receive homework assistance, Criterion-Reference Competency Test (CRCT) preparation, math and reading enrichment, and music lessons for piano, drums, singing and music theory.
