The Clayton County Police Department has been awarded $91, 200, in grant funds by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety (G.O.H.S). The grant will allow the department to extend its participation in the state's Highway Enforcement of Aggressive Traffic (H.E.A.T.) Project for 2010 and 2011.
According to Clayton County Police Public Information Officer, Capt. Tina Daniel, the funds will be received by the police department, in November. "The grant pays for the three-person specialized unit's [ H.E.A.T] vehicles, maintenance, and equipment," said Daniel.
She added that a salary is also funded through the grant for one officer with Clayton County, and the county funds the salaries for the remaining officers.
"The mission of the participating...H.E.A.T. units [is] to reduce motor vehicular crashes, injuries, and fatalities through the systematic delivery of effective speed, seat belt, DUI, and aggressive driving counter measures," Daniel said.
"The H.E.A.T. unit project aims to increase the impaired driver apprehension rate, provide heightened community awareness, and educate the public in DUI laws," she continued.
The project will also help reduce speeding, seat belt and aggressive driving violations, Daniel said.
