Merchants create prize-winning scarecrows

As Halloween approaches, the winners of a seasonal scarecrow contest have been chosen from competing merchants in the Main Street McDonough District.

The contest, sponsored by Main Street McDonough, encouraged participating merchants to set up a scarecrow display in front of their businesses, said Main Street McDonough Director Linda Schenk.

The judges viewed each entry, and chose three winners. The winners were announced Friday, said Schenk.

Out of nine entries, first place went to Cat's Pajamas, at 48 Griffin St. The judges awarded second place to Shutterbugs LTD, at 10 Macon St., and third place went to Bliss, at 20 Macon St.

The scarecrow at Shutterbugs is standing over an overturned child's tricycle, holding a doll in its arms. A sign next to the display says, "Shutterbugs says, it's scary to text and drive."

Shutterbugs owner, Dannille McGouirk, said she got creative with her scarecrow. She said the theme of her display was not to text while driving.

"There's been an accident. The scarecrow was out with the baby on the tricycle. Somebody hit the tricycle, and he had to rescue the baby," said McGouirk.

The idea for the scarecrow was her own, but she enlisted the help of a family member, when putting the display together.

"It probably took us a couple of weeks to get everything together," continued McGouirk. "I made the sign, and my mom made the scarecrow. It was a joint effort."

She expressed her appreciation at being chosen as the second-place winner. "I'm very excited to be recognized, and I think the theme is very important for everybody, especially for kids," said McGouirk.

The first-place scarecrow, by Cat's Pajamas, has a patriotic theme, with an image of an historic past president, with red, white and blue bunting. The sign next to the scarecrow says, "Don't be scared to crow for freedom."

The judges were looking for entries that were original, said Laura Maddox, president of McDonough Arts, and one of the judges for the contest.

"There were several that had an impact on us, for various reasons," said Maddox. "The first-place one, with the whole voting thing, really stood out, it was so topical."

She said Bliss's entry, of a happy and full scarecrow, after eating a cupcake from Bliss, also stood out.

Choosing the winners was difficult, because of the uniqueness of each scarecrow, added Maddox. "All of them were so creative. They [the merchants] put a lot of effort in them," she said.
