Clayton County Public Schools is set to begin offering free community classes, aimed mainly at the parents of Clayton County students, but open to other adults as well. The classes, which are scheduled to begin next month, are designed to help adults be better parents, while also teaching life skills, that can help parents improve their own lives.

"It's one of the district's goals to increase community engagement, and we feel this will likely lead to more parents and other members of the community becoming actively involved in the education of the children," said Mildred McCoy, the district's Director of Professional Learning. "What better way to engage the parents and the community?" she added.

The first session, entitled "Helping Your Child At Home," will be offered on Oct. 5, beginning at 6 p.m., at the school system's S. Truett Cathy Professional Learning Center, which is located at 1087 Battle Creek Road, in Jonesboro.

According to an information sheet for the classes, interpreters will be provided for people who do not speak English.

Future sessions, include: "Career Cruising," on Oct. 18; "Cyber Safety," on Oct. 19; "Resume Writing." on November 9, and "Interview Skills," on Nov. 11. All of the sessions will begin at 6 p.m., and will be held at the professional learning center.

Other planned sessions, which have not yet been scheduled for specific dates, include: "Basic Computer Skills;" "Working with Students with Disabilities;" "How to Get the Most Out of a Conference;" "Gang Awareness;" "Time Management for Parents," and "The ESOL [English to Speakers of Other Languages] Connection for Speakers of Other Languages.
