I know in whom I believe - James C. Bell

Several years ago, my wife and I had the pleasure of visiting Paris, France. Paris is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and there is so much there to see and enjoy.

We spent a day in the Louvre, a grand museum in the heart of the city, which houses many famous paintings and sculptures. We especially enjoyed seeing the "Mona Lisa," a work of art by Leonardo da Vinci, and perhaps, the most famous portrait of all time.

I was surprised to find the painting behind locked doors through which one had to view the small picture from 10 to 12 feet away! The priceless work of art was kept safely locked away in an environmentally controlled room to which few had access. It is preserved there for prosperity with the hope it will last forever.

However, there are few things in existence today that will last forever. I know of only one, the Person and the will of God, with whom, those who believe in Him, hope to live forever in the kingdom of Heaven.

In fact, this is exactly His promise to true believers in God and His Son, Jesus Christ. We find this great promise of God in His Holy Word: John 3:16, which says, "For God so loved the world, (meaning all mankind, all the people on earth and perhaps all creation) that He gave His one and only Son, (Jesus Christ is uniquely God's Son) that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."

I'm sure you are very familiar with this verse. Actually, most of the people with whom I visit and share what the Bible says about salvation know this great verse by heart! But I wonder how many would know verse 17, which says, "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world but that the world through Him might be saved."

God foresaw from the beginning how man would fall into sin and knew man could not save himself. Man needed a Savior, not a condemner, so God sent His perfect Son.

While we were visiting Paris, a business acquaintance of mine met us there and was kind enough to personally show us some of the famous sites in that great city. He took us to a fine restaurant known for its delicious food, and we enjoyed a great meal. He suggested afterwards that we go to one of the city's greatest and most beautiful cathedrals -- the Sacre Coeur.

It is built on a hill overlooking the city, and as we walked over to it, I asked him what faith he was, thinking he surely knew the Lord. His answer, surprisingly, was, "I have no faith."

For just a moment, he looked very sad and alone but before I could even begin to share my faith with him, he shut the door of his heart and changed the subject. How I wanted to tell him, as St. Paul said in 2nd Timothy 1:12, "For I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day." Psalm 103: 17 says, "The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear Him."

What about you, my friend, do you believe in God through Jesus Christ? If you believe there is a God, please accept His Son, Jesus, and be saved today!

Then you will know Him and will be persuaded he can and will keep you in Heaven with Him forever! May God bless you!
