Members of the Clayton State Laker men's basketball team competed over the summer in the SEBL Summer Basketball Pro-Am League, and a few came away with some postseason honors.
Three returning Lakers garnered All-League selections in the South Division of the 2010 SEBL Metro A-League. Senior point guard Timmy Downs was selected first team All-League, while senior forward Brandon Robinson was a second team selection and senior center Michael Thorogood was selected third team All-League.
In addition, Thorogood was also honored on the SEBL All-Defensive Team.
Their team, the B.C. Lakers, qualified for the SEBL Playoff finals for the first time since 2007. The Lakers, a team composed primarily of current and former Clayton State players, finished 10-1 overall in division play. Clayton State returns three starters and four of its top five scorers off last season's squad that advanced to the Peach Belt Conference semifinals.
"This was another step that our guys were able to play together and battle some top competition," said Clayton State head coach Gordon Gibbons. "We've welcomed our new teammates during this fall, and continue to prepare for the upcoming season."
RECRUITNG CLASS ANNOUNCED: Gibbons also announced his 2010-11 recruiting class on Tuesday. Signing with Clayton State is a pair of JUCO transfers - power forward Andrew Bachanov from State College of Florida and guard Anthony Talley from Gloucester County College - plus freshman guard Wesley Celestine from Fort de France, Martinique.`
A 6-foot-9, 245-pound sophomore from Orlando, Bachanov will give the Lakers a legitimate scoring threat in the post, and complement returning senior center Armon Jones on the boards. Bachanov average 13 points and seven rebounds a game last season at State College of Florida before missing the final 10 games of the season with an injury.
A 6-2, 188-pound junior from Philadelphia, Talley adds a legitimate shooting threat to the perimeter for the Lakers. He was a two-year starter at Gloucester County College in Sewell, N.J. Talley averaged 10 points, three rebounds and two assists a game last season as a sophomore. As a freshman, he averaged 15 points, six rebounds and five assists.
In his two seasons at Gloucester County, Talley connected on 117 3-point baskets.
A 6-4, 200-pound wing, Celestine has will be another shooting threat from the perimeter as well. Celestine's player-coach relationship with Gibbons goes back a number of years as Gibbons does a camp in Martinique every summer. Celestine has played for numerous junior club teams in Martinique, most notably the top club team - the Golden Star.
Bachanov, Talley and Celestine join freshman guard Zach Bradley, who signed with the Lakers last November. Bradley was a prep standout at neighboring North Clayton High School in Riverdale
In addition, Gibbons welcomes back both Thorogood and fellow senior Willie Walker, who both red-shirted last season
