Students were evacuated at Mundy's Mill High School, in Jonesboro, due to a fire, Wednesday, according to Battalion Chief Landry Merkison, of the Clayton County Fire and Emergency Services Department.
According to Charles White, Clayton County Schools spokesman, dispatchers received a call regarding a fire at the school around 1:33 p.m. "The first fire unit arrived on the scene at around 1:40 p.m., and within about ten minutes they were able to bring everything to a conclusion," White said.
Mundy's Mill High School is located at 9652 Fayetteville Road.
Merkison said the fire started in a metal storage unit, which was detached from the school. He said he did not have information, Wednesday, on how the fire started, or whether arson or suspicious activity was involved.
Merkison added that there were no injuries and the school was not damaged. "Firefighters concentrated on the building by hosing it down, to make sure the fire did not spread to the school," said White.
"Students remained outside until 2:05 p.m., and then returned to the gym, to get out of the heat of the day," he said.
Following the evacuation, students were dismissed early, bus-by-bus, which White said was a "lockdown procedure."
