Hampton resident, Kenneth Yancey, is counting his successes in a series of milestones.

The 47-year-old owner of Signarama of McDonough, in his 16th month as a business owner, was recently recognized for his progress in sales.

Yancey earned $117,587 in gross sales for June 2010, according to Justin McKay, regional vice president for United Franchise Group, the West Palm Beach, Fla.-based parent company of Signarama.

"I've always wanted to succeed at what I did," said Yancey, who acknowledged that becoming a business owner was a recent revelation. Yancey said he gained experience in the sign business, when he worked four years for Sign Store, a manufacturer and fabricator in Macon, Ga., as well as when he worked as a private sign-maker during the decade prior to opening his new sign shop. Signarama of McDonough, located at 1977 Jonesboro Road, opened in June 2009.

McKay presented Yancey with three Gold Star Achievement Awards for Outstanding Sales Volume, representing three different gross sales milestones his business achieved during the month of June. Yancey's latest achievement was surpassing the $100,000 mark in gross monthly sales for Signarama.

"They're doing a fantastic job," said McKay. "They're one of the fastest-growing stores in the Southeast. Ken is an up-and-comer, but he is also becoming a mentor within our franchise system."

McKay said the franchise system has nearly 900 Signarama stores in 50 different countries worldwide, with Signarama of McDonough being one of the more successful ventures.

Yancey said he celebrated his first anniversary in business at Signarama with gross sales topping $100,000, and began his second year with gross sales of $200,692, in August 2010.

"We'd like to have a million dollars in annual sales by Dec. 31, 2010," said Yancey.

The sign shop owner noted that his first year of gross sales reached $420,000. He said the business has grown quickly to include clients from out of state. More than half of his business is interstate business.

"We do a phenomenal amount of work for a [Florida] retail shopping center developer and a residential developer," he said. "We're able to compete with anybody."

Yancey said Signarama of McDonough is one of only 23 in the state of Georgia, and employs five people, excluding himself and his wife of nine years, Katherine. Katherine splits time between the sign shop and her party supply store next door -- Party Time Plus.
