Patrick, Sidney Lanier

Sidney Lanier Patrick, 89, longtime Lakeland, Fla., resident, passed away on April 1, 2011, due to congestive heart failure. He was born July 27, 1921, in Spalding County, Ga., and grew up around Locust Grove and McDonough. Sidney is survived by his wife of 67 years, Merle; sons, Howard (Gainesville, Fla.), Robert, and Richard (both of Houston, Texas) and their families, including eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild; sisters, Barbara and Wylena. He was preceded in death by his parents, William (Bill) and Emmie Patrick; brothers, Clements and William, and sister, Eleanor. Sidney graduated from Henry County High School in 1937. He served in the Air Transport Command during World War II, and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1947. He began his career with Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., achieved C.L.U. designation, and retired in 1981, after 33 years as a representative and assistant manager. He and Merle moved to Lakeland and were members of First United Methodist Church there, since 1954. Sidney served on the Lakeland Planning and Zoning Board, and for many years, as a voting precinct volunteer. He worked to establish the Lakeland YMCA, and was active in Indian Guides, and he helped start the blood bank at Lakeland General Hospital. Sidney’s immediate and extended family was first in his heart. Family and friends often sought his advice. Honoring tradition, he and Merle traveled back to Henry County each summer to prepare the family tent and attend Shingleroof Camp Meeting. In retirement, he loved yard work, picking fruit, barbecue, and his grandchildren. A memorial service will be held April 30, in Houston, Texas, where Sidney and Merle spent the past year to be close to their family.
