Clayton County Police have charged a man with kidnapping and aggravated assault, after he allegedly carjacked a woman at a local library and stabbed her when she tried to escape.

Police spokesman John Scheller said Danielle Nathaniel Tomes, 30, then fled in the woman's green Saturn in front of Tara Woods Apartments, when Officer Leslie Watson tried to stop him. The car was still moving at 10, to 15 mph when Watson opened his driver's door to stop it. Watson was not hurt when the Saturn hit his patrol car, Scheller said.

Tomes fled the scene, through the apartments, and into Church of the Harvest International. Tomes came running out the front door just as other officers pulled into the church parking lot, Scheller said.

The ordeal began at a county library branch on Battle Creek Road. Tomes allegedly approached a woman asking for a ride. When she refused, Tomes reportedly demanded she drive him away from the library. When she had to stop for traffic at Lakeview Drive, Tomes told her to keep going. When she refused and tried to leave the car, Tomes stabbed her in the right arm, Scheller said.

The woman, whose identity was not immediately released, was taken to a hospital, but Scheller had no additional information on her condition.

Police recovered the knife and took Tomes into custody.

According to the Georgia Department of Corrections, Tomes was released Jan. 31 from Rutledge State Prison, after serving more than 12 years of a 20-year sentence, for aggravated assault on a Fulton County police officer.
