Jackson, Grady Overton Jr.

Grady Overton Jackson, Jr., age 70, of Rome, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011 at his residence, following a period of declining health. He was born in Greene County Sept. 19, 1940, son of the late Grady Overton Jackson, Sr., and Mary Lou Barnhart Jackson. Grady was a 1958 graduate of Jackson High School. He graduated and received a B.A. degree from the University of Georgia in 1962. He was president of his freshman class at UGA, was the pledge trainer at Kappa Alpha Fraternity and was a director of the Athens Touchdown Club. Grady was co-owner of the Shetland Shop, Ltd., a men’s clothing shop in Athens, for six years. He was associated with the Wilkes County Stockyard and in the cattle business for 10 years. He had also been marketing and sales recruiter for pre-paid legal insurance and was associated with Combined Insurance Company as well as several others. For the last several years, Grady and his wife, Janet, owned and operated Southern Delights, a gourmet food and gift basket company in Marietta. He loved cooking, recipes, gardening and football, especially UGA football. Survivors include his wife, best friend and partner, Janet Kimbell Jackson, of Rome; children, Kathy and Monty Rast, of Cameron, S.C., Leigh and Carlton Hearn, Jr., of Augusta, Grady Overton Jackson II and Elizabeth, of Augusta, Donna and Lon Wess, of Dallas, Ga., Richard Christopher Ballard, of Cartersville; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Walker Nixon, Waller Hearn, Sam and Virginia Jackson and Shannon Wess; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Anita and Bruce Nelson, Barbara Castleberry, Candy and John Griffith, Kay Smart, Debbie Kimbell, Dean Kimbell, John and Patti Kimbell and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be Saturday, Aug. 13 at 3 p.m., in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home in Jackson. Chaplain Mike Westmoreland will officiate with entombment in the Jackson City Cemetery.
