Grant allows school to purchase music

The Eddie White Academy, in Hampton, was awarded a $1,490 grant through Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI) Music Fraternity for Women, to purchase new music for the school’s choral library.

Choral Director for Eddie White Academy, Chantae Pittman, said she applied last year for an award — through SAI — which is given annually for music education outreach programs. She said last school year, she submitted an application for SAI grant funds, and according to Pittman the submission process was pretty straight forward.

“[In the application process] I [had to] include what the use of the money was intended for,” said Pittman, “how the program would benefit from the new music, and a principal’s recommendation.”

It was earlier last week when Pittman said she received news from the fraternity they would award the school’s “Choral Music Library Project.”

The money from the grant, she said, will be used to purchase five sets of octavo music for unison, two, and three parts. Also on the list for new materials to be purchased will be 45 copies of the sight-singing method books, titled, “Sing at First Sight,” which will be in both Level one and two.
