Coming off a tournament championship this past weekend, Union Grove will face one of its toughest subregion challenges of the early season.

The Wolverines host defending Class AAAA champion Jones County in a Region 3-AAAA, Div. A game this evening. Union Grove has won its last 11 games, including winning the Buccaneer Bash at Kennesaw Mountain over the weekend.

“This is an experienced team,” Union Grove coach Rod Pipkin said. “I’m not surprised at how well we are doing. I’m hoping the momentum continues.”

For that to happen, the Wolverines will have to defeat another team on a hot streak. The Greyhounds enter the 6:15 p.m. contest on a 14-game winning streak. Jones County lost its season-opener 4-2 to Whitewater before rebounding to win its next 14 games.

Pipkin said that Jones County graduated nine seniors from its championship team, but he hardly believes the Greyhounds are in a rebuilding mold.

“I just like to say that they are reloading,” he said. “They always have younger kids that can play. We might be a little more experienced, but they are going to bring a good team in here.”

Ace Megan Betsa, a junior, will get the pitching start for the Wolverines, who hold a one-game lead over Jones County in the subregion standings.

Last season, Jones County won both meetings in two closely contested games. The Greyhounds got a 3-1 win at Georgia Tech before a 2-0 win at home.

“We are hitting the ball really well now,” Pipkin said. “We are playing with a lot of confidence with all these wins. I’ve always said that the winner of our region has a great shot at winning state this year. We are excited about this opportunity against Jones County.”
