Photo by Derrick Mahone Despite his team’s 21-18 loss to Briarwood Christian last weekend, Eagle’s Landing Christian coach Jonathan Gess still has the No. 2-ranked team in the state in Class A as they host AAA Henry County Friday.
A 21-18 loss to the top-ranked team in Alabama wasn’t enough for any pollster to lose confidence in Eagle’s Landing Christian.
The Chargers retained their No. 2 ranking in the Associated Press poll that was released Tuesday, even getting one first-place vote among the seven pollsters. Defending state champion Clinch County stayed in the No. 1 spot.
ELCA lost 21-18 to Briarwood Christian of Birmingham, which is the top-ranked team in Class 5A.
ELCA was able to move the ball on Briarwood with 326 yards of total offense, 204 coming on the ground. Junior Keyante Green had 109 yards rushing with a touchdown.
“We still feel good about our team,” Green said. “We came in the game as the underdog.”
The Chargers scored three first-half touchdowns, but were unable to convert on two two-point conversions and an extra-point kick, which proved to be the difference in the game.
ELCA will again play a team in a higher classification when Henry County, a Class AAA school, visits on Friday.
