ATLANTA (AP) — State Sen. Vincent Fort says he has prostate cancer.
The Atlanta Democrat told The Associated Press he was diagnosed this summer and is deciding now on a course of treatment.
He may miss a portion of the next year's legislative session as he recuperates.
Fort said that despite the diagnosis he feels great and is looking forward to getting back to the Senate following his treatment.
He is serving his sixth term in the Georgia Senate.
The 55-year-old Fort is known as a vocal advocate for the poor. He was among those arrested during an Occupy Atlanta protest in October and was also a frequent presence at rallies opposing the state's tough immigration bill.
