Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport began to provide flights to Havana, Cuba on Wednesday, said a spokeswoman for the airport.
Katena Carvajales said the weekly, non-stop, chartered flights by Marazul Charters, are operated by Delta Air Lines. “As the busiest connecting airport in the world, we are pleased to have been awarded this designation to serve Cuba,” said Louis Miller, aviation general manager at Hartsfield-Jackson. “We are excited to be able to add new service to Havana from all over the country, through Atlanta.” The airport is one of the few locations in the U.S. that offers flights to Cuba, added Carvajales. She said, however, that the charter flights to, and from, Cuba are only authorized under the designation of “purposeful” travel. Passengers who fall under this category of travel include those who have relatives in Cuba, are associated with the medical or agricultural sectors, or are flying to the country for educational and religious purposes. — M.J.
