Riverdale man charged with child rape

A Riverdale man is being held without bond in the Clayton County Jail, after police charged him with child rape, according to court documents.

Jerry Lamar Ruffin, 40, of Treasure Drive, was arrested Tuesday. He is charged with rape of an 8-year-old girl, aggravated child molestation, aggravated sodomy and cruelty to children.

Warrants issued to Clayton County police state that the child reported the incident to her mother Oct. 21. The mother took the child to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Hughes-Spalding for a physical exam.

Warrants allege that the exam confirmed the child's account.

The child was interviewed at Rainbow House in Jonesboro where officials said she told the same account of the rape. The warrants allege that Ruffin told the child during the assault that he was checking to see if anyone had been touching her.

Ruffin is charged with cruelty to children, according to the warrants, because the child suffered "cruel and excessive physical and emotional pain."
