Can angels help Christians witness? — Jim Bell

There’s a story in the Bible, in the book of Acts, that tells of an Angel helping Philip witness to an Ethiopian. This angel guides Philip, liberates Peter, and he also strikes down Herod. He tells Philip to go south, to the desert road that goes down from to Jerusalem to Gaza.

So Philip started out, and on his way, he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and on his way home, was sitting in his chariot reading the book of Isaiah, the Prophet.

The Spirit told Philip, “Go to the chariot and stay near it.” Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked.

“How can I, unless someone explains it to me?”

So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. The eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, as a lamb before the shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. In His humiliation, He was deprived of justice. Who can speak of His descendants? For His life was taken from the earth.”

The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is this prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture, and told him the good news about Jesus. As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. Why shouldn’t I be baptized?”

And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then, both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing.

I think this is proof that angels do help Christians witness to lost souls. I want to point out some very awesome things that the Spirit did in this story. First, Scripture says an angel of the Lord said to Philip — Here, the angel or Spirit of the Lord directed Philip to go to the desert road. I believe he bodily took him to the eunuch, and Philip just appeared along side his chariot!

The eunuch had a driver and probably some soldiers along on the trip to guard against robbers. Scripture doesn’t tell us this, but common sense and the eunuch’s position as treasurer for the Queen makes it probable. The Spirit had the eunuch reading about Jesus and how He was treated from the Old Testament, or more likely from scrolls. Philip asked the most important question: Do you understand what you are reading?

I don’t know why the eunuch did not question the presence of Philip, for I’m sure he did not know where he came from, but he accepted him and invited him to sit with him and explain what the scroll said. He had to be under conviction of the Lord that he was lost and needed to be saved.

Another awesome thing happened just after he was baptized, Philip mysteriously disappeared! Wow! Praise God, He can do anything!

As my readers know, I witness for the Lord often, and have had some awesome experiences myself, although not as clear as Philip’s. Recently, my Faith team and I were going to visit two families who had visited our church. We had decided to go to one family first, and as I was talking, I drove in the direction of the second family without realizing it until one of my team members said, “You are going the wrong way.”

I agreed and pulled over to recheck the address. The Spirit brought to my mind that we should continue to the second address for we would experience the saving grace of the Lord. As we witnessed to this family, two young boys, ages 10 and 15, were saved! Praise the Lord!

I hope you are saved, but if not, please listen to that small voice of the Spirit in your heart, encouraging you to choose Jesus as your Savior. Who knows, you may encounter an angel who would lead you to Christ. I pray you will.
