Resurgens Orthopaedics South Surgical Center is hosting its third annual coat drive for women and families in need this holiday season. The coats collected this year will be donated to Haven House of Henry County, a shelter for battered women. The overflow of extra items will be donated to nearby homeless shelters that partner with Haven House.
To participate in the coat drive, simply drop off a new or gently used coat or blanket at the Resurgens Orthopaedics South Surgical Center, in Morrow, at 6645 Lake Drive, from now until Dec. 19.
In the winter of 2009, Resurgens physician, Gary Stewart, partnered with Resurgens Orthopaedics South Surgical Center to start the program, and collected more than 200 coats and blankets for homeless men, women, and children at Calvary Refuge Center, a faith-based family shelter in Forest Park. The 2010 drive benefited Haven House.
“This time of year many people want to do something kind for others, but aren’t sure how,” said Stewart. “The coat drive is a great opportunity for people to help out. Many times, the women and children at the battered women’s shelter are left with only the clothes on their backs. A warm coat is a valuable gift.”
With the 2011 coat drive already under way, Resurgens Orthopaedics South Surgical Center and Stewart are hoping to collect even more coats and blankets this year.
