Clayton County police have charged a Jonesboro man with the shooting death of his roommate, and released the name of the victim.
Officer John Schneller said Wednesday that Samuel Morgan, 50, has been charged with murder in the death, on Dec. 7, of his roommate, Cornelius Laverne Sain, Jr.
Sain died two days before his 59th birthday.
Morgan is being held without bond in the Clayton County Jail on murder and probation-violation charges. Morgan was sentenced to probation in September, after pleading guilty to two counts of driving under the influence, according to Clayton County State Court records.
Police investigating the death allege that Morgan waited about 15 hours after shooting Sain four times in the torso and shoulder, before calling Clayton County 911.
However, detectives discovered that Morgan made an 11-minute call to Fayette County 911, about 7:50 p.m., Dec. 7, disguised his voice, and told dispatchers seven times there was a shooting.
Morgan did not leave a correct address, so no one went to the Jamestown Way home in Jonesboro, until he called Clayton the next morning at 11:52 a.m., according to warrants in the case.
When police arrived and found Sain's body, they also discovered that the hallway had been bleached. Police said neighbors heard "bang, bang" about 7:50 p.m., which coincides with the Fayette 911 call.
Police said Morgan thought the victim was stealing from him. The men had been friends for eight years and roommates for about 18 months, said police.
They moved to the Jamestown Way townhouse about four or five months ago.
