Lights, camera –– action!
Those words were uttered recently at the French Market and Tavern, in Henry County’s southernmost city, Locust Grove.
Tractor trailers hauling lighting and camera equipment, were at the restaurant for the filming of an NBC sitcom pilot, “On We Go,” starring actor Nathan Lane.
“It was a huge honor for us to be chosen for the pilot, the exposure for the French Market was fantastic,” said Rick Weaver, co-owner of the restaurant with his wife, Lauren. “We are now in a National Database as a future filming location.”
The restaurant is located at 3840 Georgia Highway 42.
One of the local production managers of the show is from Henry County, and his mother frequents the French Market, said Weaver, who would not disclose names.
“She told him, ‘You have to see this place.’ She thought it might be useful for his career,” Weaver explained.
The building was built in 1906. The Weavers spent six months renovating it, and restored all of the original wood, which is being used for the dining tables.
“We got to meet [Lane], it was a brief meeting, and we tried to stay as invisible as possible while they were shooting,” said Weaver. “Nathan Lane was super nice, and was complementary of what we have done with the building.
“They constantly asked us, had anyone ever filmed here before. We assured them we have been open for six months, and no one has ever shot anything here before,” Weaver said.
Certain areas of the restaurant were more accessible than others. For instance, the crew filmed upstairs in the Weavers’ office. “The scenes they shot in our place were set in New York,” said Weaver. “The office upstairs, was set as a shoebox apartment in New York. Downstairs was a coffee shop/cafe, set in New York , and they thought the French Market was the perfect setting.”
The film crew arrived at the restaurant on Dec. 7, and filmed on Dec. 8, The cast worked from 10:30 a.m., until 5:30 p.m. Cast members Lane and Caroline Rhea, were in the scenes filmed at the Locust Grove restaurant.
More than 100 people were on hand for the filming of the sitcom. Some were local extras, hired to appear in a few of the scenes. A few French Market employees also were used as extras.
Lane is the star of the sitcom. He plays the part of an unlucky actor, who thinks he is cursed because he resembles (even though he is not) Nathan Lane.
Comedian/actress Caroline Rhea co-stars opposite Lane, Ken Jenkins and Cheyenne Jackson, in the comedy by Douglas McGrath.
The comedy, which McGrath wrote and will direct, centers on Jasper (Lane), an unlucky actor whose Broadway aspirations must be put on hold when his father’s (Jenkins) health takes a turn for the worse, and he is forced to return to his Texas hometown, according to the show’s web site.
