Riverdale police are investigating the deaths of two people, whose bodies were found at the site of an apartment fire, which broke out early Tuesday morning at the Chateau Forest Apartments complex, according to the city's police chief.
Riverdale Police Chief, Samuel F. Patterson, said in a written statement that Riverdale Fire Services responded to a fire at 801 Chateau Lane, unit 116, at approximately 2:20 a.m., and received assistance from Clayton County and Morrow firefighters.
He said a male body was discovered at the site of the fire, just over three hours later, at approximately 5:50 a.m. He did not specify where the body was found, in relation to where the fire occurred. Several hours later, at approximately 1 p.m., investigators found a second body, belonging to a female, as they were going through the rubble from the fire, according to the police chief.
"The investigation continues as to the cause of the fire, and any other victims," Patterson said.
Police had not determined a cause of death for either deceased person, as of Tuesday afternoon, according to Patterson's written statement. Neither he, nor officials from Riverdale Fire Services could be reached for further comment later on Tuesday. Patterson did not specify in his statement how many units were destroyed, nor how many families were displaced by the fire.
Patterson did say, however, that the Riverdale Police Department's field operation commander, the Clayton County Fire Marshall, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation were notified, and responded to the scene of the fire, after the male body was found. He said the American Red Cross is also providing assistance to the displaced residents.
