Pedestrian struck by van, killed

Friends and neighbors stood at the entrance of a Jonesboro apartment complex, in shock, after a 23-year-old man was struck a vehicle and killed, Thursday morning.

"He was my best friend," Michael Durden said with tears in his eyes.

He added that he has been friends with the victim, Brandon Duncan, for five years.

Witnesses on the scene said Duncan was walking home from the Magic Food Mart, across the street from The Park at Mt. Zion Apartments, located at 701 Mt. Zion Road, in Jonesboro, when he was hit a van.

Durden said he did not see the incident, but a resident of The Park at Mt. Zion Apartments — where witnesses said the victim lived — said she did see the tragic incident unfold.

Sheila Hutchins, 20, said she opened the door to receive services from Comcast Cable representative, when she saw a Dodge Caravan and a BMW arguing as they were driving.

"It was like a road-rage situation," said Hutchins. She added that Duncan looked at his phone, and crossed the street.

"When they hit him, he flew back, and like the top of his body was sideways and his legs were straight."

"It was like his face was cut ... it was a lot of blood," she added.

According to Clayton County Police Public Information Officer, Capt. Tina Daniel, the victim was leaving the Magic Food Mart across the street from the apartments.

The two vehicles were traveling westbound on Mt. Zion Road, according to Daniel.

"The BMW initiated a lane change ... The Caravan swerved into the center lane, and hit Brandon Duncan," said Daniel.

She said the accident occurred around 9:51 a.m.

"The victim was pronounced dead on the scene," said Daniel.

Witnesses said the BMW fled the scene, and the Dodge Caravan chased the car down, and demanded that the driver come back to the scene of the accident.

Daniel did not immediately release the names of the drivers, Thursday, due to the ongoing investigation. She added that charges are pending –– awaiting the outcome of the investigation .
