Eugene "Gene" W. Ray Eugene "Gene" W. Ray, of Forest Park, passed away Feb. 8, 2011, at the age of 97. Affectionately known in Clayton County as "Mr. Tennis,"Gene Ray was actively involved in tennis as a competitor, teacher and organizer for many years. Gene began playing tennis at the age of 15 on a dirt court built by his father in the 1920's, which was adjacent to his home in Ackworth. A resident of Forest Park for more than 50 years, it can be truthfully said that Gene introduced tennis to the Forest Park, Jonesboro and Clayton County areas. As a senior player, Gene earned 21, No. 1 Georgia rankings and 9, No. 1 Southern rankings. He was inducted into the Georgia Tennis Hall of Fame in 1995. When he was not on the tennis court, he was taking care of his bluebirds on the campus of Clayton State University. Gene built many bluebird boxes and placed them in various wooded areas around the campus. Saving the bluebirds was a long-time hobby of his. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m., at the chapel of Thomas L. Scroggs Funeral Directors. Visiting hours will start Saturday at 1 p.m., prior to service time. Gene is survived by his long-time friend and neighbor, Carolyn Ramsey. Thomas L. Scroggs Funeral Directors, Morrow, is in charge of arrangements, (770) 961-2828.
