The first day of the GHSA Traditional Wrestling Tournament at the Arena at Gwinnett Center offered few, if any, surprises Thursday as several Southern Crescent wrestlers expected to contend for a state title took care of business in the round of 16.
In Class AAAA, the Union Grove triumverate of Griffin Higginbotham, Alex Lazor and Hunter Gamble cruised into the quarterfinals.
Higginbotham (103) will face Alcovy's Jon Seymour, Lazor (130) will face Alexander's Cody Dickerson and Gamble (160) will face Alexander's DeAndre Sims.
Other top contenders to advance were top-seeded Billy Abrahamsen (119) of Ola and Justin Kerce (125) and Omar Waller (189) of Woodland.
Lovejoy's Giovonte Ortiz (140) also advanced with a 7-3 decision over Ola's Zac Bennett.
Union Grove finished the day in fifth place with 13.5 points, while Ola was in seventh place with 12 points.
In Class AAA, seven of Henry County's 11 wrestlers won their round of 16 match, including reigning state champs Jake Orozco (135) and Dalvin Tomlinson (285).
Other Warhawks to advance were Hunter Hogan (103), Bruce James (112), Brett Yarbourgh (119), Rodney Mason (145) and Telly Sloan (215).
Henry County remained in striking distance, ending the day in third place with 21.5 points, behind reigning state champion (28) and Heritage-Catoosa (23).
Locust Grove had four of its 10 wrestlers advance, including top-seeded Zack Brown (14) and Bryan Sorrows (152), and top contender Blake Sorrows (160).
Bryan Sorrows will face Stockbridge's T.J. Daniels, who advanced over Stone Mountain's Damien Schofield, in the quarterfinals.
The Wildcats were in eight place with 16 points at the end of the day.
The tournament continues today at 8:30 a.m., with all semifinals matches completed.
