Nearly all of the Southern Crescent's top wrestlers expected to contend for individual state titles reached the finals match in their respective weight class Friday in the GHSA Traditional Wrestling Tournament at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
In all, 12 wrestlers from the Southern Crescent will compete for a state title today. The consolation semifinal matches begin at 9:30 a.m. Finals matches start at 4:00 p.m.
In an interesting twist, two wrestlers from Henry County will go head-to-head for a state title. Locust Grove's Zack Brown and Stockbridge's Shakeeno Jenkins will wrestle for the 140-pound title.
Brown was one of three Locust Grove wrestlers to make the finals. Jared Benefield will face Caleb Morris or White County at 130 pounds, and Bryan Sorrows will face Dalton Lane of Murray County at 152 pounds. All three are looking to become the first state champions in school history for the Wildcats.
Brett Yarbourgh (119) and Dalvin Tomlinson (285) reached the finals for Henry County. Tomlinson won a state title in Class AA last season as a sophomore.
In Class AAAA, Union Grove's big-three of Griffin Higginbotham (103), Alex Lazor (135) and Hunter Gamble (160) each reached the finals.
Higginbotham will face Alonzo Allen of Rockdale County, Lazor is set to meet Zack Wolaver of Loganville and Gamble will wrestle Brooks Climmons of Pope.
Ola's Peyton Durflinger advanced to the finals at 112 pounds, where he'll face Cameron Munsy of Pope.
Lovejoy's Giovonte Ortiz will face Pope's Jake Hensen in the 140 pounds finals match, where he'll look to become the Wildcats' first-ever state champion.
Woodland's Omar Waller could also become the Wolfpack's first state champion in school history in his finals match at 189 pounds against Demtre Liguori of East Paulding.
